All physical activity when done with awareness can significantly improve mental and physical health. Yoga, in particular, offers a unique path to well-being by addressing not only physical fitness but also mental clarity, emotional balance, and spiritual growth. This makes it a valuable practice for people seeking not just physical health, but overall harmony and vitality in life.

Yoga comes from the root word "yuj" in Sanskrit which means "to yoke" or "to unite." This union refers to various aspects of an individual - body, mind, and spirit. There is a clear goal of achieving peace, balance and ultimately community care and belonging. Yoga involves more than physical postures (or ‘asanas’ in Sanskrit). It also involves intentional breathing (pranayama), meditation (dhyana), and moral practices (yamas and niyamas). Of all these, the physical postures are the most well known partly due to the fact that, for many people, movement is one of the simplest (yet powerful) ways to disconnect from the daily pressures of life.

When we move, our focus naturally shifts away from external stressors and internal chatter. This shift in attention helps to create a break from the non-stop thoughts and worries that tend to dominate our minds; we can then learn to become more aware and develop a sense of calm and clarity.

Other benefits of mindful movement include reduced stress and anxiety, improved relationships and an improved sense of self. Yoga offers us the amazing opportunity to just be with ourselves no matter what we have going on while also working towards where we want to be.
